A difficult to reach group with the Christian message in Hong Kong is the Triad (organized criminal) community. While triad members have apparently been able to learn quickly to make monetary gains in both licit and illicit ways despite rapid economic and political changes, they have, however, been slow to learn the Bible. It seems that it is not a matter of their intelligence but of motivation. The basic psychological needs theory claims that when an individual's basic psychological needs-autonomy, competence, and relatedness are satisfied, self-motivation, academic engagement, and learning commitment are enhanced. The purpose of the present study was to examine the role of the satisfaction of the basic psychological needs in Christian learning among the converted Hong Kong triads. A qualitative approach was employed by conducting semi-structured interviews with 25 triads or triads-related members aged 30 to 70. Results of the present study supported the universal claim that the satisfaction of the basic psychological needs of the Hong Kong triads mediated motivation to learn the Bible. The role of the teacher was a key element in fostering the satisfaction of the basic psychological needs of the triad members. Additionally, a spiritual dimension emerged from the triads' responses. The ministry of the Holy Spirit was an indispensable part of the entire learning process in that He worked in the hearts of the triads through life crises initiated by God and enabled them to understand the Bible. A model of the Triads' motivation to learn the Bible was proposed, with the ministry of the Holy Spirit playing an active role in the process of Christian learning. From the findings, implications were drawn that led to practical recommendations on effective outreach strategies for Christian educational practices and principles for the ongoing ministry to the Triads and other communities for the church. The present study was the first to apply a social science theory on Christian learning among the Triads of Hong Kong. It was also a ground-breaking study to explore and develop the best strategies to enhance the delivery of the Christian message to the near unreached target group.
