Rabih Alameddine is one of the most pioneering authors in the field of Arab-American literature. His experimental writing style mixes multiple narrative forms from different literary traditions that make his works hard to situate into one specific category. This aesthetics of liminality makes Alameddine's novels unique in comparison to the majority of the literary productions found in Arab-American fiction. This literary field grapples with various dominant structures that limit the production of stylistically and thematically complex narratives that can address the multiple layers in the ever-changing Arab-American experiences. In my thesis, I argue that Alameddine's liminal narrative forms create multilayered textual patterns that exemplify the various nuances of the Arab-American identity. In the three novels analyzed in this thesis - Koolaids, I, the Divine and The Hakawati - Lebanese-American characters struggle with their multifaceted identities. Yet, Alameddine does not let this narrative become fixed. I show how his experimental writing style provides him with the dynamic potential to construct in each text distinct stylistic patterns that embody personal aspects particular to the experiences of the different protagonists, all the while pertaining to their shared communal struggles. In doing so, Alameddine demonstrates the importance of formal innovation for the field of Arab-American literature as it can widen its scope to explore uncharted stylistic and thematic directions.
