The Marvel Cinematic Universe is a superhero film franchise that has a sizeable following and proven financial success (Chmielweski, 2021; Navarro, 2022). Since 2008, the MCU has incorporated various female characters into the franchise, with these early constructions of women being hypersexualized, eventually shifting to be less sexualized and more authentic. This project critiques the MCU from Phase One through early Phase Four to illustrate a shift in visual and narrative representation of female characters, from women who exist solely as objects for desire and catalysts for male character development, to women becoming protagonists and key characters in driving the MCU's narrative arc. Using Laura Mulvey's work within feminist film theory and the concept of the male gaze, this project critiques the evolution of female representation in the MCU throughout the various phases of film and television production, from Phase One with the introduction of the original Avengers until Black Widow (Shortland, 2021), one of the films in early Phase Four. This critique serves to show where the MCU began and its current state regarding the construction of female characters.
