Diabetes is one of the major chronic illnesses that has become a global epidemic. The use of mobile apps has been shown to improve glucose monitoring and reduction of glucose levels among people with diabetes. This project answers the question: Is the use of a mobile application associated with a decrease in fasting blood sugar (FBS) levels among African American adults with type 2 diabetes? A sample of 33 African American patients was recruited for this project from a local outpatient primary care clinic. Participants received training and education on the use of the mySugr app, diabetes, and diabetes care, and were followed for six weeks. A paired samples t-test of the mean differences of pre- and post-intervention fasting blood glucose levels, BMI, blood pressure, and diabetes knowledge check was statistically analyzed. A comparison of the mean differences showed statistically significant outcomes for FBS: t(31) = 5.337, p < .001, 95% CI [26.78, 59.91]; BMI: t(32) = 3.104, p = .004, 95% CI [0.22, 1.08]; and diabetes knowledge check t(31) = 10.578, p < .001, 95% CI [0.17, 0.26]. Therefore, the use of a diabetes mobile app proves effective in decreasing blood sugar levels. The clinical application of the findings will improve self-care management while decreasing FBS, diabetes complications, healthcare costs, and workforce delinquency.
