Spirituality continues to be a consistent touchstone in the daily lives of a significant portion of the world's population. Historically neglected in rigorous psychological work, spirituality has become a significant area of investigation. Spiritual bypassing, still in its infancy scholastically, has become a research interest in countries across the globe. The literature which exists lacks connectivity between statistically oriented, quantitative research and qualitative, depth psychological study. The purpose of this inquiry, through heuristic, hermeneutic, and alchemical hermeneutic methodologies, is to explore how spiritual bypass has been quantified and measured and how these statistical analyses can help psychologists understand the phenomenon in relationship to the depth tradition. This thesis endeavors to describe how spiritual bypass functions. In doing so it highlights the feminine principle; explores the self in relationship to spirituality; and emphasizes the relationship of spiritual bypass to group complexes, trauma, and the individuation process.
