Context: Dentistry is considered to be a stressful and exhausting profession prone to high levels of burnout. The doctor-patient interaction is considered to be one of the major factors responsible for strain and burnout among dentists. The literature implies that personality factors, such as dentists' level of empathy toward patients, their degree of sensitivity to external and internal stimulation and the strategies they use to cope with stress, may mediate between the specifics of dentist-patient interactions and dentists' level of burnout. Nevertheless, these personality factors have not yet received appropriate empirical attention, and the literature is not yet clear about this.Aim: The major purpose of this three-paper dissertation was to explore how the personality characteristics of empathy, sensory processing sensitivity and strategies for coping with stress associated with doctor-patient interactions are related to burnout (BO) secondary traumatic stress (STS) and work/compassion satisfaction in dentists (CS). Additionally, in the study I explore the influence of demographic and professional factors found in the literature as related to professional stress on the above-mentioned burnout indicators.Methods: Participants included 243 practicing Israeli dentists (49% response rate) listed on the websites of professional dental associations in Israel as well as in professional internet sites and groups. Questionnaires were emailed or distributed through professional internet sites. Univariate analyses and linear regressions were conducted to assess the impact of personality factors on burnout, secondary traumatic stress and compassion satisfaction.Results: Paper 1 focused on the role of empathy in the doctor-patient relationship and its influence on BO, STS, and CS. The main findings indicate that having an empathic approach toward patients results in less burnout, does not intensify traumatic stress and promotes more work satisfaction among dentists.Paper 2 aimed to analyze the influence of the personality trait known as sensory processing sensitivity (SPS) on BO, STS and work satisfaction (CS) among dentists. Results of the study indicated that study participants with higher SPS (more sensitive to stimulation) were found to exhibit more burnout and secondary traumatic stress and were less satisfied with their work than their less sensitive colleagues. Excluded from this finding were dentists high on aesthetic sensitivity (a subfactor of SPS) who had higher levels of work/compassion satisfaction (CS) and less BO and STS.Paper 3 explores the mediating effect of coping strategies used by dentists to cope with the stress that emerges in the dentist-patient relationship on dentists' BO, STS, and work satisfaction (CS). The main findings of the study indicate that task-focused coping strategy and avoidance coping are more effective in reducing BO and STS and promoting more work satisfaction than emotional-focused strategyConclusion: These findings emphasize that in order to diminish BO and STS among dentists and to increase their work satisfaction, the dental school curriculum must include interventions that deal with strengthening empathy and developing dentists' aesthetic sensitivity and task-oriented style of coping with professional stress. Additionally, dentists high on SPS and therefore more predisposed to burnout and secondary trauma should be identified during dental studies in order to prepare them to cope better with forthcoming interpersonal work-related stressors.

520 $a הקשר: רפואת השיניים נחשבת למקצוע מלחיץ ומתיש, החשוף לרמות גבוהות של שחיקה. יחסי רופא- מתרפא נחשבים לאחד הגורמים המרכזיים האחראיים ללחץ ושחיקה בקרב רופאי השיניים. מהספרות משתמע שגורמים אישיותיים, כמו רמת האמפטיה של רופאי השיניים כלפי המטופלים, רגישותם לגירויים פנימיים וחיצוניים ו אסטרטגיות שלהם בהתמודדות עם לחץ, ככל הנראה מתווכים בין הלחץ הנוצר במהלך אינטראקציות בין רופאים למתרפאים לבין התפתחות השחיקה בקרב רופאי השיניים. למרות האמור גורמים אישיותיים אילו לא קיבלו עדיין את תשומת הלב האמפירית התואמת וכן הספרות איננה בהירה לגביהםמטרת המחקר: היעד העיקרי של עבודת מחקר זו, המורכבת משלושה מאמרים, היה לחקור השפעתם של מאפייני אישיות של אמפטיה, רגישות לעיבוד חושי ושל אסטרטגיות התמודדות עם לחץ, המקושרים ליחסי רופא-מתרפא, על שחיקה )BO ,)לחץ טראומטי שניוני )STS )וסיפוק מעבודה )CS ,)בקרב רופאי השיניים.שיטה: במחקר נכללו 243 רופאי שיניים העוסקים ברפואת השיניים בישראל )%49 הענות( ואשר הופיעו באתרים של אגודים מקצועיים של רופאי שיניים וכן כאלה שהופיעו באתרי אינטרנט נוספים ובקבוצות מקצועיותמאמר ראשון התמקד בתפקידה של אמפטיה ביחסי רופא מתרפא והשפעתה על BO ,STS ,ועל CS. הממצעים העיקריים מצביעים על כך שגישה אמפטית בקרב רופאי השיניים כלפי המתרפאים, מקטינה שחיקה, לא מגבירה את הסטרס השניוני שלהם, ותורמת לסיפוק מעבודתם. מאמר שני נועד לבחון השפעת תכונת אישיות המוכרת בתור רגישות לעיבוד חושי )SPS )והשפעתה על BO ,STS ,ועל CS בקרב רופאי השיניים. תוצאות המחקר הצביעו על כך שנחקרים בעלי SPS גבוהה )רגישים יותר לגרייה( הציגו רמה גבוהה יותר של שחיקה ולחץ טראומטי שניוני )STS )והיו פחות מסופקים מעבודתם מאשר שותפיהם לעבודה הפחות רגישים. יוצאי מהכלל היו רופאי שיניים בעלי רגישות אסטטית גבוהה )גורם שניוני של SPS )אשר התגלו כבעלי בעלי רמות גבוהות יותר של סיפוק מעבודתם והיו פחות נתונים ל BO ול STS.מאמר שלישי התחקה אחרי השפעתם המתווכת של סגנונות התמודדות עם לחץ, בהם משתמשים רופאי השיניים לשם התמודדות עם המתח הנוצר ביחסי רופא מתרפא, על BO ,STS ,ושבעיות רצון מעבודה )CS )שלהם. הממצע העיקרי מצביע על עדיפות של סגנונות התמודדות עם לחץ ממוקדי משימה )-task coping focused )והימנעות )coping avoidance )בהפחתת BO ,STS Iשיפור סיפוק מעבודה על פני סגנון התמודדות ממוקד רגשות(coping focused- emotional. (מסקנות: ממצאים אילו מבהירים שלשם הפחתת BO ו STS בקרב רופאי השיניים ולשם הגברת שביעות הרצון שלהם מעבודתם, על לימודי רפואת השיניים לכלול בהכרח התערבויות המחזקות את האמפטיה ומפתחות רגישות אסטטית וכן משכללות שימוש מוגבר בסגנון התמודדות ממוקד משימה עם הלחץ המקצועי. בנוסף, יש לאתר במהלך לימודי רפואת השיניים, רופאי השיניים עם SPS גבוהה ועקב כך בעלי נטייה גבוהה יותר לשחיקה ולחץ טראומטי שניוני )STS ,)בכדי להכינם טוב יותר, לגורמי לחץ בין אישיים, בהם עתידים להיתקל.
