Elder abuse is growing worldwide and may be prevented with intervention. A qualitative systematic literature review was utilized to identify strategies to protect the elderly using elder mediation as intervention during cases of conflict and abuse. Research questions to be answered were: What are the benefits of elder mediation during cases of conflict and abuse, what are the barriers to elder mediation, and what strategies can be used to protect the elderly using elder mediation as an intervention during cases of conflict and abuse? Data collection involved curation of literature from 2013 to present, to identify key word concepts, patterns, and themes. After NVivo analysis, two themes emerged: (1) benefits of elder mediation, and (2) education and training. However, findings indicated that elder mediation was not the most effective intervention strategy to protect the elderly during cases of conflict and abuse. Results underscored the multidisciplinary team approach to elder abuse intervention and prevention as powerful and effective. Recommendations for future research include assessing the best conflict reduction and abuse prevention practices for multidisciplinary teams serving elderly clients.
