Eating disorders are psychiatric conditions that can have a high mortality rate, and anorexianervosa has the highest mortality rate of any mental disorder. People suffering from eatingdisorders have the highest mortality rate of any other mental illness. Eating disorders impactcollege students' emotional and physical well-being, as well as their peers and their campuscommunity. It is vital to a female athlete's overall well-being for coaches and athletic staffto have a strong educational foundation of eating disorders. The purpose of this project wasto conduct a systematic literature review that would answer two questions: To what extent dofemale student-athletes perceive their coaches' level of responsibility when a femalecollegiate athlete exhibits symptoms of an eating disorder? What educational resources areneeded for coaches to be better equipped when managing a female student-athlete with aneating disorder? Information was grouped into support, and knowledge and understanding tobetter answer these questions. The review found that coaches lack knowledge in eatingdisorder management and that coaches and athletes have varying perspectives of the coach'sresponsibility when female athletes exhibit symptoms of an eating disorder. This reviewprovided information on what knowledge coaches need to obtain to better assist studentathleteswith eating disorder management. A recommendation for athletic staff and coachesis that coaches can use the information gained in this study to assist other coaches andadditional athletic staff with eating disorder management practices and support femaleathletes for years to come.
