In this grounded theory multiple case study, namely Exploring the Practice of Disciple-Making in Hong Kong Protestant Churches, I stated my interest to know: How do Hong Kong Evangelical Protestant churches practice intentional discipling? But it was the issue of optional discipleship that underlined my interest. This qualitative study was multidimensional in that it sought to understand the phenomenon of disciple-making conducted in the church setting by means of a strategy of grounded theory within multiple case studies. I collected data via one-on-one, semi-structured qualitative interviews in that all 14 participants were members of the pastoral staff of the churches. Individually, each disciple-making ministry provided rich and thick data. By working on them horizontally using comparison and contrast, this study constructed a grounded theory of ecclesiastical discipleship which was a concept and also the content embedded in the process of a proposed two-level discipleship as the final outcome. As found, ecclesiastical discipleship was inseparable from personal discipleship in that the modeling of the mentors was the key. Although all disciples had the responsibility to make disciples, it was primarily the church pastoral staff who performed the duty. So, I recommended that seminaries took up the responsibility to train students to be qualified discipleship mentors in churches. Moreover, I recommended the proposed two-level discipleship to be a concrete solution to the issue of optional discipleship.
