Background: Pharmaceutical products are essential for treating and preventing public from illness, and research and development (R&D) for new drugs is indispensable for keeping the whole industry consistently successful and efficient. How to keep the pharmaceutical innovation energetic and sustainable is one of the main challenges worldwide. Such challenges also occur in China during the development of our domestic pharmaceutical industry. But few researches have been found on focusing to study the domestic pharmaceutical innovation systematically.Objectives: This project aimed to: (1) systematically provide a review of the current development and the achievement accomplished of pharmaceutical industry in mainland China; (2) explore the perceptions and opinions from the key stakeholders to form a comprehensive view of the progresses, barriers of domestic pharmaceutical industry; (3) illustrate the possible solution and policy recommendations for improving and promoting the further development of pharmaceutical innovation of the domestic pharmaceutical industries.Methodology: The innovation system analysis (IS) was used. The documentary analysis and quantitative data were analyzed by the main components of IS. Eight semi-structure interviews were conducted to collect qualitative results for the functional analysis.Results: This project analyzed the development of domestic pharmaceutical industry in the past decade followed by the IS analysis, the 3 main components in the IS were identified. The 7 functions in the IS were discussed respectively under the results of semi-structure interview.Conclusions: This project provided a comprehensive view of the development and innovation of domestic pharmaceutical industry. The progresses which have been made, and the barriers hindering the pharmaceutical innovation were identified. The output of this research will be valuable for the policymakers in the related field to consider the future development in this sector.
