Most of international students who migrate to the U.S. or to other parts of the world to pursue their education go through many challenges that hinder their academic performance. U.S. HEIs might not achieve international student access and completion goals without identifying the "challenges that face minority and international students" (Atebe, 2011, p. 9). International students from Africa in U.S. HEIs face challenges, ranging from cultural and social, to academic and financial (Awosanya, 2018; Chege, 2016). The purpose of this study was to explore the challenges experienced by African international students in U.S. community colleges. A qualitative phenomenological research technique was utilized to investigate ten African international students from three selected community colleges. One urban and two rural community colleges from two different states were selected for this study. This study was conducted via telephone interview and the researcher used open-ended questions to investigate three overarching research questions. In addition, Van Kaam's seven steps for coding phenomenological data was employed to capture African international students' perceptions, experiences, and challenges. This study's findings indicated that African international students enrolled in community colleges in the U.S. experienced (1) difficulties during the visa processing and fees (2) difficulties in transferring their credits, and results of entrance exams, (3) difficulties with English language proficiency, (4) perceptions of high tuition and fees, (5) accommodation and transportation issues, (6) lack of scholarship at their community college, (7) health insurance challenges, (8) lack of jobs on-and -off campus, (9) loneliness and alienation, (10) and difficulties with academic advisors.
