Research shows baby boomers, a large generation of highly educated individuals, are beginning to retire. Seeking new activities to occupy their time, they find volunteerism is an option, which is to the advantage of nonprofit organizations. Volunteer retention is vital to the success of a nonprofit organization. Volunteer turnover is costly, from hours lost in recruiting and training, to losing out on the revenue created by the volunteers working for the organization. The present study sought relationships between the perceptions of leadership style, older adult characteristics, and volunteer retention through the research question: To what degree do perceived leadership styles of managers and older adult's characteristics predict continued volunteering in nonprofit organizations? The quantitative study used a nonexperimental, cross-sectional, correlational, design, to determine if there were correlations between the independent variables: transformational leadership style, leader-member exchange style, and servant leadership style; the moderator older adult characteristic predictors: gender, race, education level, and marital status; and the dependent variable: intention to remain with the nonprofit organization where they serve as volunteers. The study was also to determine the degree of such correlations. Online surveys collected data from 179 older adults age 65 and above who volunteer at a faith-based scouting organization of a specific Protestant denomination in the western region of the United States. Analyses of the collected data were through Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS), and linear regressions tested the hypothesis. This study fills a gap in the literature regarding the influences of perceived leadership style on the older adult volunteer's decision to remain at a nonprofit organization. The results of the study concluded a significant positive relationship between the perception of the transformational leadership style and the older adult volunteer's intention to remain with the nonprofit organization where they serve. There was also a positive relationship between the leader-member exchange leadership style and the older adult volunteer's intention to remain with the organization where they volunteer. Additionally, there was evidence the older adult male who never married was most likely to remain with the organization as a volunteer. The results of the study may be useful as a nonprofit organization plans training for their leaders and with the recruitment of older adult volunteers.
