Even though the concept of servant leadership is a component used by United States (U.S.) faith-based youth sport organizations conducting programs and sports camps abroad, introducing servant leadership to, and serving youth female athletes aboard is a challenge. The problem addressed in this study is that challenges exist for sports camps to promote female athlete leadership. The purpose of this qualitative case study was two-fold to document how female campers at a faith-based basketball camp develop in their faith and as leaders, and challenges administrators and coaches face running international faith-based sports camps for females. The purposive sample was eleven female athletes, ages 13-17, one coach and an administrator. The study site was an American faith-based sports camp in an Eastern European country. Data were collected through open ended interviews. Findings revealed that the female athletes were able to choose by themselves to play basketball, but some families had financial difficulties and relied on Academy scholarships, and transportation was also a challenge for many. However, the athletes grew in their faith and leadership skills. The challenges the administrator and coaches faced was that the female athletes did not yet receive servant leadership opportunities on a consistent basis. Recommendations for future research include how leaders apply the concepts of servant leadership such as inspiring leadership, teamwork, building community, trust, awareness and foresight throughout their practices, during their team meetings and when they practice community service in the city.
