In this dissertation, I clarify and highlight five key features of oppression (viz. group-targeting, domain-crossing, interlocking, systematicity, and robustness), and argue that, given these key features, individualistic explanations do not have what it takes to explain oppression. Instead, we need to appeal to social structures, and, more specifically, we need an account of social structure that builds in explanatory connections between structural elements. To meet these explanatory demands, I offer an account of social structure that is both pluralistic and unified. It is pluralistic in that it identifies two main kinds of social structure- which I call internalized structure and external structure- that operate, to a significant extent, independently of one another. Internalized structure is comprised of ideology and the social practices (or "informal institutions") that emerge from the ideology. On this picture, ideology consists in a network of psychological phenomena (e.g. concepts, beliefs, scripts, and affective dispositions) that cohere into a worldview. External structure, on the other hand, is comprised of formal institutions, which are made up of roles, relations, and rules that govern the behavior of the institution. This account is a unified account of social structure insofar as the two kinds of social structure are causally and constitutively interrelated, and it is these relations between structures that help provide the explanatory connections needed to explain oppression. Apart from providing the resources needed to explain oppression, I show that this account of social structure also offers the insight and theoretical resources needed to develop an adequate account of white ignorance.
