The purpose of this exploratory case study was to determine if and how teacher-led field trips to a science museum could be used as a reform strategy to improve STEM instruction and foster underrepresented ethnic and racial minority students' interest in STEM subjects and careers. Five field trip factors under the control of urban teachers were examined through the theoretical framework of Falk and Dierking's (2000) Conceptual Learning Model (CLM). Qualitative data on urban teachers' perspectives, planning processes and influence on African American and Hispanic students' museum field trip experiences was collected through face-to-face interviews, observations, and document analyses. The data was color-coded and analyzed to produce seven key findings regarding urban teachers' perceptions and use of science museum field trips in their classroom curriculums. Findings from this case study suggest that teacher-led science museum field trips may be used as solution by science museums, public school systems and government agencies to foster African American and Hispanic students' interest in STEM subjects and careers, improve STEM teaching and learning in public school systems, and increase U.S. STEM degree attainment by broadening the STEM pipeline to ensure global competitiveness for the 21st century.
