This paper utilizes the China Family Panel Studies, a biennial longitudinal survey that started in 2010, to examine the impact of China's recent reforms to its National College Entrance Examination, a.k.a. the Gaokao, on the well-being of high school students. Using an event study model and a difference-in-differences model with linear time trends, this study filters out pre-reform trends to identify clear positive effects over time of the Gaokao reforms on Chinese high school students' self-ratings, rating of their schools, and academic pressure. This finding suggests that a negative perception of the reforms, commonly encountered in China, may not be well-founded. I further introduce family fixed effects to control for family-level variation, and find that the reforms continue to hold a positive, albeit weaker, effect, even within families. Based on these findings, policymakers should consider expanding the reforms, although further studies of direct performance impacts are needed.
