Due to rapid urbanization and industrialization, farmland abandonment has become an increasingly important problem in China in recent years. To promote sustainable land-use management and environmental sustainability, it is essential to understand the mechanisms of farmland abandonment. While there is a general understanding that the rural labor out-migration directly drives this land-use trend, rigorous theoretical and empirical analyses are largely absent. In this study, I construct the logit model to explore the driving forces of farmland abandonment in China from the household level and introduce "fixed effects" to isolate possible unobserved heterogeneity. The results revealed that the rural labor force working off-farm is the main factor of farmland abandonment. The estimated effects of the proportion of out-migration workers in the household and the proportion of workers in the household who work off-farm but reside on the farm are almost identical. The particular location of off-farm work effort is less important, and the proportion of individuals working off the farm is a critical factor. Additionally, a household with larger population size, higher agricultural income, and higher agricultural subsidy would have a lower probability of abandoning their farmland. If a household located far from the town, has a larger amount of farmland area and higher wage income would have a higher probability of abandoning their farmland. To alleviate farmland abandonment, this study suggests several policy implications based on the results.
