Depictions of mental illness in media are often riddled with negative and stigmatizing portrayals. These portrayals influence the attitudes and beliefs of those who view them, sometimes leading to inaccurate beliefs about the mentally ill and subsequent negative treatment. With the varying inaccuracies of society-developed stigmas, it can be assumed that it may not be ideal to view mental illness through the lens of stigma, but this is the lens that influences many American's beliefs about mental illness. These are the same Americans who will potentially serve as jurors, potentially, in a case dealing with mental illness and its influence on criminal activity. Thus, the purpose of this study is to examine the impact of media (i.e., television and movies) and varying stigmas on jury perceptions of mental illness and subsequent verdicts of guilt or innocence.
