This paper looks at the public personas of female hip-hop DJs from 1975 - 1998. It aims to explore the overt and more subtle cultural conditions prevalent in the hip-hop community at the time, and how that led certain female DJs to create carefully crafted personas. These personas served not only as a critical part of the DJs performance, but also as a meticulously crafted tool that provided branding, and informed their marketability in what were often hostile and misogynistic conditions.
