George RR Martin's series A Song of Ice and Fire and its HBO adaptation Game of Thrones have quickly become America's favorite series. From ice zombies to dragons, Martin's work keeps audiences enthralled in its massive storyline. Fantasy is not a new genre, but the way Martin approaches women in fantasy is. This thesis seeks to analyze and discuss the main female characters and their roles in a patriarchal system. Through feminist Lacanian criticism, I discuss how Martin's female characters, namely Cersei Lannister and Daenerys Targaryen, find identity by defying gender norms. This project seeks to reveal that these two characters, though often polarized, have similar approaches to rising above their male counterparts. Helene Cixous tells us women are either hysterics or sorceresses, destined to shunned away or burned at the stake: but in Cersei Lannister readers find a hysteric who refuses to be silenced, and in Daenerys Targaryen a sorceress who cannot burn. Thus proving the game of thrones may take place in a "man's world," but it is most certainly a woman's game.
