Since the genesis of superhero literature in the 1930s, superhero characters have mimicked the major challenges facing American society at that particular time. Whether it be in print as comic books or on the silver screen, superheroes have always been the ones to lead Americans into a better tomorrow. In the 1930s and 40s, heroes like Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, and Captain America fought through the Great Depression and World War 2 just like the American people. The 1950s and 60s would see the Hulk, Superman and Captain America tackle the challenges of nuclear warfare, communism, and their own moral beliefs. The 1970s were met with an American public that was becoming distrustful of their government, a relationship with drug use, and urban crime. These were met with actions taken by Spider-Man, Green Arrow, Iron Man, and Captain America. The 1980s became an era of hyper conservatism focusing on a tough stance on crime from the federal government. New takes on how to combat this were rolled out by Marvel and DC comics with grittier and more violent iterations of Batman, The Punisher, Daredevil, and The Watchmen. The 1990s saw a lull for superheroes, as the country boomed economically, heroes found themselves with little threats to deal with. The first twenty years of the 21st century had Americans dealing with terrorism both foreign and domestic for the first time ever. Heroes such as Batman, Iron Man, and Captain America now had to deal with such ilk. Finally, the 2020s has been short lived but it has given us climate change, racial discrimination, police brutality, and a global pandemic. Superman, Captain America, Luke Cage, The Punisher and Iron Man have all answered the call against these challenges. The purpose of this thesis is to outline that since the inception of superheroes in the 1930s, they have been used by their creators to examine the major crises we face as a nation and they will continue to do so until humankind grows tired of the superhero genre. The question that we must ask ourselves is why is the relationship between 20th and 21st century societal, political, and scientific landscapes so influential that superhero mediums continue to thrive?
