The underutilization of mental health services disproportionately impacts and can exacerbate mental health problems within the Black community. African American adolescent males are among those with disparities in help-seeking for mental health treatment. Those living in impoverished communities are at a greater risk of adverse childhood experiences (ACES) and exposure to traumatic events that can lead to mental illness. Suicide rates among African American adolescents have increased by sixty percent over the past twenty years (Price & Khubchandani, 2019). Other mental health concerns impacting this vulnerable population include growing rates of depression, anxiety, and PTSD (Lindsey et al., 2017). Compounding these deleterious statistics, many African American children are raised by Black single mothers at higher rates than other nonethnic groups. These single mothers alone bear the responsibility as caregivers to seek help for children who may suffer from mental illness. Issues that impact ethnic minorities and have vicarious mental health effects include polyvictimization and trauma (Andrews et al., 2015). Both are associated with social determinants or environmental factors, such as living in a low socioeconomic area with greater exposure to criminal behavior, domestic abuse, and community violence. Saving Our Sons (SOS) is a community resource that aims to address mental health disparities disproportionately affecting outcomes for African American adolescent males. This psycho-educational program includes a curriculum that teaches single mothers key mental health terms to increase their Mental Health IQ and identifies environmental and sociocultural factors that may contribute to poor mental health.
