My dissertation dispels an opinion held by many people in the world that African Americans have not made any meaningful contributions to the globe's development except through their chattel production in the United States during enslavement. As objectified producers or mere animals, African Americans were observed to be less than human beings with no rights or capacities to contribute intellectually to the nation's progress. African American women were perceived to be of less value than African American men, sometimes referred to by Francis Beal as "a slave of a slave," subjugated in all facets of her life to her enslavement obligations and in personal life (Kendi 187). Once emancipated and able to express herself freely and permitted to learn the fundamentals of writing, a select few African American women emerged as accomplished authors, writing counternarratives that revealed an authentic version of the American story, for the most part from the perspective of the nation's underbelly. The twentieth century was a period of prolific literary creation. African American men ushered in the Harlem Renaissance, a period of artistic explosion and expression in large urban northern communities. The men were not alone. In the tradition of Phillis Wheatley, female writers tackled the realities of life as an African American woman. Nella Larsen, Nikki Giovanni, and Toni Morrison emerged to be in the group of the most successful and well-known. With globalization as its principal theme, this dissertation examines four subthemes evident in Larsen's Quicksand, Morrison's Paradise, and Giovanni's The Collected Poetry of Nikki Giovanni, 1968-1998. By applying historical research, interpretive research, and the Critical Race Theory, I demonstrate globalization's sprawling potential as expressed within four subthemes of antiracism, education, freedom, and spirituality.
