In 1944 when Dr. W. E. B. DuBois returned to the NAACP, this organization like the Afro-American community generally was militantly anti-imperialist and anti-colonialist. When he was ousted in 1948 because of disputes over foreign affairs and anti-communism, the NAACP had begun to swing decisively behind the "red scare". At the same time, DuBois remained steadfast in his leftist politics. He became a leader of the Council on African Affairs, which was the leading U.S. organization pushing for decolonization of Africa. He led the "Ban the Bomb" campaign, which circulated the Stockholm Peace Appeal. He remained active in the Progressive Party and ran for the U.S. Senate in New York on the American Labor Party ticket. During this time racism at home was the "achilles heel" of U.S. foreign policy. Similarly, DuBois' close personal relationships with Nkrumah, Jagan, Nehru and other anti-colonial leaders meant that the denial of his passport and other restrictions placed against him had to fall--just as Jim Crow fell victim to the exigencies of U.S. foreign policy. His ties to the anti-colonial world also meant that the leadership of the NAACP, in an attempt to keep up with international developments, had to lessen their own "cold war" against DuBois. Though his principal biographers and others have chosen to portray him as isolated, bitter, frustrated and a "prophet in limbo" during this critical period, the opposite was the case as he influenced world leaders, artistic celebrities, and civil rights leaders. The NAACP and the CPUSA, two of the pivotal organizations he aligned with, though often in conflict held similar positions on many critical issues. The discrediting of Hitlerite racism during World War II meant that Southern racists shifted ground from Blacks as "inferior" beings to Blacks as subversive beings. Thus, the "red scare" and the House Un-American Activities Committee had a disproportionately racist edge. Similarly, the continuity between Progressive Party activists and civil rights activists, as symbolized by DuBois, cannot be denied.
