Two significant problems oppose recovery from addiction: difficulty sustaining recovery and vocational difficulties. Research suggests that employment problems are linked with addiction and that vocational improvements can be helpful in early recovery. Little is known about the vocational lives of people beyond early recovery. This study explored whether vocational concepts were present at different levels for people in different stages of recovery and whether these variables predicted long-term recovery. An online survey was given to 173 people in recovery about their length of abstinence, career adaptability (CA), vocational identity (VI), satisfaction with life (SWL), and demographics. As proposed, a MANCOVA revealed no differences in CA, VI, or SWL between people in four stages of recovery. An exploratory adjustment to a three stage model revealed that SWL was greater for people in the third stage of recovery (36+ months of abstinence) compared to those in the first (18 months or less) but that there were no differences for VI or CA. The same analysis using greatest length of abstinence instead of current revealed similar findings, but added: VI was greater for people in the third stage of recovery than those in the second (18-36 months). Multiple Regression demonstrated that only age and income predicted length of abstinence, income was the only positive predictor of SWL, and CA negatively predicted SWL. The same pattern held in improved models, but VI also emerged as a positive predictor of SWL. Though all original hypotheses failed to reject the null, the importance of income in predicting length of abstinence and SWL could represent improvements in career and vocational lives. Those in early recovery might be encouraged that SWL was greater in later stages of recovery. Finally, VI predicted satisfaction in life but was also more prevalent in those who have experienced relapse after a significant length of abstinence. Future directions for both research and clinical practice are discussed.
