Organizations undergoing divestiture generate much stress for many employees, and some employees make career-impacting decisions based on this stress and the environment in which it is experienced (Kanter, 1993). Effective leadership during times of stress-such as layoffs, restructuring, and even expansion-is often cited as a positive contributor to employee morale and subsequent increases in either productivity or employee retention (Chambers, 2008). The leader who employs the techniques of authentic leadership and executes the elements of authentic leadership, is often able to reduce the stress level among followers, improve overall morale, and become a positive contributor to the health of the organization (Avolio & Gardner, 2005; Meneghel, Salanova, & Martinez, 2016). Leaders who strive to correct unethical or immoral leader behavior (Emery, 2016; George, 2003) often cite authentic leadership as a preferred style. Intermixed with this leadership style is the concept that employee morale and well-being can be directly affected by an authentic leadership style (Hinojosa, McCauley, Randolph-Seng, & Gardner, 2014). This paper describes the concept of authentic leadership and the effect such leadership style has on the morale of employees in a global organization that is undergoing divestiture. The study involves employees in both United States and foreign locations, offering additional insight into the global aspects of authentic leadership in action.
