Anthropogenic climate change and recreational use of coral reefs has led to the degradation of essential ecosystems globally. Over half of the world's coral reefs have been destroyed causing a loss in biodiversity due to overfishing, sea level rise, intensifying storm activity, and habitat destruction from human activity, making reefs one of the most threatened ecosystems on the planet. This quantitative biserial correlation study focused on the relationship between experiential conservation education and tourists' attitudes and behavioral intentions towards coral reef sustainability. Tourists participated in an educational program involving coral outplanting with the Coral Restoration Foundation in Key Largo, Florida. Survey questions that were designed for participants to self-assess their attitudes and behavioral intentions towards coral reef and local sustainability were gathered over several months. Analysis showed a strong positive correlation between both tourists' attitudes, r (136) = .69, p < .05 and behavioral intentions, r (136) = .71, p < .05, after participating in the program. While more research covering eco-friendly, experiential tourist education is needed, results from this study suggests that educating tourists can be utilized as a means to safeguard coral reef ecology. Furthermore, integrating conservation education initiatives into tourist activities may encourage an increase in eco-friendly travel and sustainable development goals.
