The local church is where the biblical work of making and maturing disciples of Jesus Christ is done. The work of making disciples of Jesus Christ is paramount to the task of bringing transformation to the lives of those impacted within and without the church. The biblical mandate of church leaders is to "equip the saints" for the work of the Body of Christ. This project sought to study and discover the local church's best practices to equip the laity for ministry. This study was needed as many churches lack clearly defined processes and cultural values that aid in developing the congregation's giftedness and deploying the laity for effective ministry. This project utilized a literature review to understand equipping and deploying the laity for ministry. Further study was conducted with eight local church leaders, seven laity, and two business and three military leaders. The local church participants came from churches ranging from average to large in worship attendance size and from resource-rich and poor congregations. The business leaders in this project came from various fields, including education, for-profit, and not-for-profit businesses. The military leaders came from three armed service branches: the Air Force, the Army, and the Navy. The significant findings of this project concluded that there are six keys to creating a church culture that will allow the local church to equip the laity for ministry more effectively and enable the culture to be healthier and more life-giving for everyone involved in the life of the church. The first key is the senior leader's effective delegation of ministry authority to the whole body of Christ. The second key is the modeling of self-care by the senior leader, which includes spiritual, physical, emotional, mental, and relational well-being. The third key to creating a life-giving equipping culture is the understanding that any leader's priority is to intentionally disrupter the status quo if transformation is to be experienced. The fourth key establishes that the currency that causes teams to thrive is trust. The fifth key is establishing the mantra for the transforming leader, which is always to have a bias toward action. The final key is to center the church culture around the expectation that something supernatural happens when the Body of Christ (re)connects with its biblical mandate of making and maturing disciples by equipping the laity for ministry.
