The common practice when translating from one language to another is to gather as much information as possible in the pursuit of providing an accurate, readable, and appropriately dignified rendering of the original text. This, of course, is appropriate, and has been the typical way in which the Masoretic Text and the Septuagint have been translated into English. When the Hebrew of the Masoretic Text was difficult to translate, the Septuagint and other translations of the Hebrew Bible have been consulted to provide help. Likewise, when the Septuagint was difficult (and because in most cases the Masoretic Text has been considered primary), the Masoretic Text has been consulted to move forward in the translation. This study undertook the task of translating the Masoretic Text of Jonah into English without consulting the Septuagint or any other translations, and then, in like manner, the task of translating the Septuagint of Jonah without consulting the Masoretic Text. This resulted in two unique translations of the book of Jonah, which were then compared to each other to evaluate the possibility of improving the final English translation of the book of Jonah. To complete this endeavor, literature was assessed on the Masoretic Text and the Septuagint, the Hebrew and Greek languages, and commentaries on the book of Jonah. In addition, evaluations of the priority of the Masoretic Text and the Hebrew-Aramaic Vorlage were discussed. To conclude the study, the differences between the Masoretic Text and the Septuagint were discussed in four categories: those differences that are notable but less significant, and then differences in Jonah's identity, in his prayer, and in the narrative of his story. A resulting English translation of the book of Jonah by me, which is intended to reflect all the above, then follows.
