What is a family and what does the Bible teach us about God's design for the family and household? Family has been valued for many reasons over the years: to enhance physical survival, produce and raise children, and to bring stability to society to name a few. Over the last fifty years, the family is suffering from social fragmentation and half of all North American marriages are ending in divorce. This has created a blurry framework for how members in a family relate with each other since there is no anchor helping them maintain meaningful interpersonal commitments about which they care about deeply. It has also created confusion in the church about the meaning of marriage, biblical parenting, and how to be a household in a Biblical sense. Though there is no such thing as a perfect family, the Bible presents the ideal as "the voluntary lifetime union of a woman and a man who parent their own children in a relationship characterized by love" (Hawkins 25). The church today has lost Biblical clarity on this ideal and as a consequence the family has weakened, and it has led to a myriad of social problems. What shifts occurred that have led to this weakening? This is an important question to ask if the church is to maintain fidelity to the scriptures and to help Christians, who are either living alone or in a family group, to draw from the resources of faith and help them create or contribute to a nurturing family life. This study sought to lay scriptural foundations on marriage, family, parenting and discipleship.Employing three focus groups and two interviews, the combined data sought to examine the definitions of men and women and the implications it has on the marriage relationship, parenting, discipleship, and building a household where God consistently forms character and teaches us the values of His kingdom. The dissertation also expands on the definition of family to strengthen the value of family bond in all of its forms. The findings suggest that Christian parents must have biblical clarity on leadership, love, and submission and preserve the dynamic by which God designed families to thrive. Some of the topics addressed are building healthy marriages, shaping home environments, understanding Biblical leadership and love, a map for discipline as discipleship, shaping the heart of a child through conversation and discipline, and Biblical hospitality.
