The local church is facing an identity crisis. Some churches are focused on programs and ministries, others on buildings and styles of music. But they are getting the cart before the horse; they are looking at what they are called to do before discerning who they are to become. Church leaders wonder why their people fail to grow spiritually and others feel compelled to leave. Churches today have become self-indulgent in ministry and worship and have grown apathetic toward the needs and desires of the people outside the church. They have lost sight of God's call and purpose for the Church universal, and it shows itself lived out in the local churches. Clergy and laity alike are dissatisfied, finding their vision for their churches woefully smaller than the call of God on their lives."Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation" (Mk 16:15). That tiny verb, "go" (Gk: πορεύομαι) literally means to get up and leave the place where you are and journey to a particular destination, and that destination, according to Jesus, is to all the world. The Christian Church was never meant to be stationary. Churches have lost their momentum and it has caused them to become stagnant in their purpose and lose sight of their calling. Moreover, the final word in that verse emphasizes to whom the Church is to go - to "everyone," also translated "all creation" (Gk: πορεύομαι); no person on this planet is excluded. If this is true, the Church has certainly misunderstood Christ's mandate. Instead, they have chosen to open the front doors of their churches and try to entice people to come in to where they are. Compound the situation with the fact that local churches have designed their worship and ministry in a way that is attractive to themselves rather than the people they hope to reach, causing those who come in the front door to exit the back door. And worst still, the people inside the church have become intolerant of those who have not yet come to faith and still carry many of the stains of this world. The end result has been a solid demarcation between the people inside the church and those on the outside. The focus of this dissertation is to change the knowledge, mindset, and practices of the people within the two churches I pastor of how God sees people outside the church doors, as a means of prompting my churches to respond to the calling of the local church. It must start by understanding the very image of God and the redemptive work of the trinity, which calls us on to continue the mission of the Christian Church universal and the local church specific, leading to a transformation of the heart and compelling us toward faithful obedience. The dissertation was designed to show the biblical and theological foundations of the call of God for his Church, as well as the linear movement throughout the Church's history, viewing the growth of the first three centuries, the enmeshment of the Church within the culture, as it moved West, and the subsequent ineffectiveness that grew out of this. In addition, we will address the decline and fall of Christendom as we attempt to rediscover God's will and purpose for the church in our postmodern world. This missional work of outreach and evangelism are not for clergy alone, but must be grasped by clergy and laity alike if it is to be realized. They must be heard from the pulpit and infused throughout every facet of ministry and program of local churches; outreach and evangelism must be taught, caught, and employed for the building up of the kingdom of God. People have bought the lie that they are "saved by association" with a neighborhood church and the true message of faith in Christ is lost inside the church as well as out. This study offers a chance to reclaim our mission as the Church, to save our souls and the souls of our churches.
