In a society increasingly marked by religious disaffiliation, this project considers how queer people have in many ways been pioneers and innovators in developing lived spiritualities of the spiritual but not religious (SBNR) and both spiritual and religious (BSAR). As testimonies of deconversion, their spiritual memoirs become a kind of altar call, an invitation to take seriously the writers' critiques of institutional religion and their creativity in constructing and enacting SBNR/BSAR identities. Their stories and signifying work become generative for other people of faith, especially ministry leaders seeking to adapt traditional ministries of personal faith formation and community transformation to the felt needs of God's people today. In this work of practical theology, I argue that emerging spiritual identities offer constructive critique and creative alternatives to traditional dimensions of religion: believing (ideas), belonging (affiliations), and behaving (commitments). The critiques and creativity of four contemporary spiritual memoirs by queer authors (two white women, two Black men) serve as theological resources for re-formed believing, reconstituted belonging, and recalibrated behaving, in pursuit of sexual-spiritual integrity and in a desire to effect change in the world. Deploying the liberative hermeneutical circle of see-judge-act to examine an analogous process of discernment in the life-writing of queer memoirists, I analyze the memoirists' new and renewed sexual-spiritual practices, identifying a process of discernment that creates the possibility for ongoing sexual-spiritual formation and ethical decision-making for SBNR/BSAR individuals and communities of praxis.
