Scholars often rely on anger vocabulary such as 'aph and charah in order to identify where anger occurs in the text. Other scholars attempt to identify anger that is not labeled in the text by relying on subjective criteria without firm evidence to prove anger's presence. This dissertation presents a method for identifying anger in biblical narratives which does not rely on anger vocabulary and which also provides a more objective measure when assessing the emotions of a biblical figure. In this dissertation psychological research regarding anger is described and used to create six markers of anger which a reader can then search for in a text. These anger markers are features of how anger is caused or how it causes a person to act. The anger markers are blame, entitlement, unmet expectations, vision of a way forward, approach motivation, and blocked goals. A reader can look for these anger indicators in a text in order to identify where anger is occurring without needing the emotion to be labeled in the text. This method is applied to the books of Genesis, Judges, and 1-2 Samuel. Within this corpus, explicit anger vocabulary would identify 32 instances of anger. Applying the method laid out in this dissertation as well as using anger vocabulary identifies 118 instances of anger. The anger identified with this method appears in a more diverse population than anger vocabulary alone would identify. Explicit anger vocabulary is arguably never used for women or groups of people, but by using this method we are able to identify a significant amount of anger in women, groups, and other overlooked categories. This method highlights anger's presence in trauma, suicidality, group violence, and other complex situations within the text. Only studying anger which is labeled by the text results in overlooking the anger of people with less societal power and this gives a skewed perspective on what anger is in the Bible. By using the method of this dissertation, readers have access to a more nuanced and complete understanding of anger in the Bible.
