The purpose of this research was to use the interpretive insights from textual criticism, social-science criticism, and narrative criticism in an integrated manner to see whether such an integration might help clarify the interpretive tensions in Mark 1:40-45. The research sought to answer the question, how might an integrated methodology that combines textual, social-scientific, and narrative criticisms help resolve or at least illuminate some of the exegetical questions surrounding Mark 1:40-45? The thesis driving this research was that an intentional integration of text-critical, social-science, and narrative methods would help illuminate the historical meaning of Mark 1:40-45, thereby helping to overcome the "difficulties" found within these three methods when used separately or at least without much integration with other methodologies. The integration of the findings of textual, social-scientific, and narrative methodologies as applied to the interpretation of Mark 1:40-45 will strengthen the argument in favor of the reading of "moved by compassion" in Mark 1:41, provide a stronger case for the social impact of Jesus touching the leper in Mark 1:41-42, and favor a narrative understanding that the leper did go to the priests. After an initial overview of the Mk 1:40-45 text using each of the above methodologies, the text was examined to see what an integrative approach might contribute to resolving the interpretive issues left unresolved by the individual methods. The result was that the textual criticism findings were re-evaluated through the lens of the social-science and narrative insights, social-scientific findings through textual and narrative insights, and narrative findings through social-scientific and textual insights. The integration of these three methodologies reinforced the reading of a compassionate Jesus versus the angry Jesus of the Western tradition. The integration also added strength to the argument that Jesus retreated to the desolate place due to his popularity and not his unclean status. And finally, the integration of the three methodologies created a better literary flow for understanding Mark 1:45. Overall, the hypothesis was supported in that the integrative approach strengthened the interpretation of the pericope by resolving some of the arguments for the angry Jesus, highlighting the overlooked social role of Jesus touching the leper, and clarifying the reasons for Jesus going into the desolate places, albeit with a change in some of the narrative flow that led to this conclusion.
