The succession process is a critical even in the life any organization. The succession event following the departure of the founder of the organization is often more disruptive and challenging than most other succession events. Additionally, parachurch organizations face the challenge of identifying the successor and making sure the successor's faith aligns with that of the organization. Finally, the succession process must consider whether to promote from within the organization or select the successor from outside of the organization. Scholars of succession planning have explored each of these issues but not examined the succession process at the point of transition for parachurch organizations experiencing the process for the first time following a founder's departure with an insider selected as the successor. This dissertation seeks to develop a biblical model for succession planning at the point of transition for nonprofit organizations utilizing Deuteronomy 31-34, John 21, and 2 Timothy. This study will establish the key ideas, steps, and practices for succession planning, insider succession, founder succession, and nonprofit succession. Then the biblical passages will be examined to identify principles that inform the succession process. Finally, the biblical texts will be synthesized with the modern succession planning literature to develop a biblical model for succession planning at the point of transition.
