Organizational mission expresses why an entity exists. The organizational mission of many Gospel Rescue Ministries (GRMs) includes effecting change both spiritually (faith in Jesus Christ as Messiah) and personally (self-sustainability) in the lives of the individuals they serve (Deep Roots, 2013; Fagan, 1986; Rooney, 1980). Directors of women's programs (program directors) in GRMs lead in a dynamic, hierarchal, and interconnected environment in terms of competing priorities and help women experiencing homelessness navigate the waters of transformation. Although homeless men and women face many of the same problems, "the concerns of women are more complex and nuanced" (DeWard & Moe, 2010, p. 116). Many women have been abused, experienced violent behavior, are the sole care giver for their children, and experience gender related issues (Bassuk et al., 2010; DeWard & Moe, 2010; Phipps et al., 2019; Reeve, 2018). In spite of the influence of program directors on service provision to thousands of women who are homeless across the United States, limited scholarly research exists on their leadership environment. Societal issues, environmental circumstances, and internal factors within the organization influence a leader's ability to achieve mission (Forbes, 1998; Herman & Renz, 2008; Liket & Maas, 2015). Consequently, these factors help to shape leadership experiences, choices and ultimately determine how service provision is provided to women who are helped by these organizations. Findings from this multiple case study offer contemporary insight on program directors' leadership context, the multi-directional aspect of their leadership, and how they influence spiritual and personal transformation in the lives of the women they serve.
