This study examines the problem of knowledge in general and metaphysical knowledge in particular, focusing on one of the greatest Ashʻari theologians, Fakhr al-Din al-Razi (1150-1210). Razi's critical approach to theology and philosophy marks a significant turn in the intellectual history of Islam. Especially in his Muḥaṣṣal, he offers a new theology that significantly influenced subsequent scholarship. Nonetheless, his critical approach toward the rationalist accounts of theological issues, primarily those of the Muʻtazila and the Muslim philosophers, may seem to suggest an extreme metaphysical agnosticism, such that the intellect cannot attain certain knowledge (yaqin) in theology. Despite the opacity of his arguments regarding whether certainty in metaphysical knowledge can be obtained, this dissertation argues that Razi's critical thinking and skepticism should not be understood as extreme metaphysical agnosticism. The first part of the dissertation investigates the Ashʻari origins of Razi's critical approach. The focal point here are two prominent Ashʻari scholars, al-Juwayni and al-Ghazzali, who offer a critique of naẓar (speculative reasoning) concerning theological knowledge and develop a moderate theology, which is not merely rationalist or exclusively traditionalist. Thus, their criticism of naẓar in theological knowledge should not be understood as metaphysical agnosticism as they still appeal to naẓar. Part two shows that Razi fills the major gaps in the Ashʻari understanding of knowledge, primarily issues concerning necessary knowledge and sensible knowledge. Part three explains how he offers the finest version of the Ashʻari account of naẓar, systematically addressed in Nihayat al-'Uqul, while defending its importance in theological knowledge. The final part analyzes how Razi implements his theory of knowledge and naẓar in practice.
