About 1.1 million international students came to the United States in the 2019-2020 school year to study at institutions of higher education (Israel and Batalova 2021). Little has been written about the qualities that make a host national student or group of students welcoming to international students. Chi Alpha Campus Ministries is a network of Christian ministries on university campuses across the United States, sponsored by the Assemblies of God. This dissertation developed components of a contextual theology of hospitality for a Chi Alpha Campus Ministries chapter at a midsized Midwestern state university. International students at the university were interviewed to discover their experiences. Chi Alpha community members were interviewed to explore their understanding of hospitality. The intersection of literature review, original social science research, and biblical-theological reflection has resulted in the development of components of a contextual theology of hospitality. Country of origin influenced on-campus experiences of international students, with those from non-White regions reporting more isolation than those from White regions, although there were exceptions. Black African students reported the least amount of connection with host national students. All host national students interviewed stated a willingness to invite international students to Chi Alpha events, but most placed preconditions on the invitation and had few connections with international students. Biblical-theological reflection with these factors in mind resulted in the determination that the purpose of hospitality should be to glorify God. Hospitality will be costly, involving crossing social and cultural boundaries, creating space, and celebrating difference. Biblical hospitality, while allowing for proclamation of the gospel, must never be manipulative. A contextual theology of hospitality of welcoming within the Chi Alpha group at the midsized Midwestern state university should include an active welcome to the marginalized, a welcome without coercion, and a welcome that creates space for diversity.
