This dissertation examines the motif of covenantal teaching within a biblical-theological methodology. Covenantal teaching is defined as instruction regarding the knowledge of God and how to maintain relationship with Him. In the Old Testament, this centered on Israel's covenant with YHWH; in the New Testament, it includes the New Covenant, inaugurated through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. This dissertation focuses primarily on how this theme unfolds in the New Testament, but reserves a chapter for Old Testament precedents. It proposes a three-tiered scriptural model for instruction, which includes primary, secondary, and tertiary levels. God does the primary level of instruction. The secondary level is done by divinely established teachers within the covenant community (i.e., Israel in the Old Testament and the Church in the New Testament). The tertiary level is instruction that happens among the broader community in informal and familial settings. This dissertation traces how the concept of God, as Divine Teacher, permeates Scripture and is introduced in the Old Testament and continued in the New Testament. The study demonstrates how designated community teachers were established in the Old Testament and continued in the New Testament, but with different participating figures, such as apostles. It posits that a key aspect of the change in instruction from the Old Testament to the New Testament is the work of the Holy Spirit, which significantly widens entry into the established teaching class through the spiritual gift of teaching. The study maintains that progression of this motif has eschatological significance, and that teaching imagery regularly serves as a marker of the eschaton. Covenantal instruction culminates within the New Creation, when God resumes His role as the covenant community's sole Instructor (Jer 31:33-34). As the fullness of God's instruction intensifies, the secondary and tertiary levels, ultimately, are no longer needed as all people are personally and perfectly instructed by God. This conclusively aids in creating a clear development of the motif of covenantal instruction from Creation to New Creation.
