Generally, Pentecostals affirm all the spiritual gifts listed in the Bible, "including speaking in tongues, interpretation of tongues, prophecy, service, pastoring, teaching, evangelism, wisdom, knowledge, exhortation, faith, healing, working miracles, distinguishing/discerning spirits, casting out evil spirits, contributing, giving aid, mercy, administration, and apostleship (I Cor. 12:8-10, 28-30; Eph. 4:11; Rom. 12:6-8; 1 Pet. 4:11; Mark 16:17)" (Espinosa). I am not a cessationist but rather strongly believe that miracles, signs, wonders, and other spiritual gifts mentioned in the biblical narratives are a legitimate part of the New Testament Church's worship life. However, some Pentecostals interpret Christianity through a philosophy in which faith, healings, and wealth acquisition are critical aims of religious adherence (Newman). With the signs and wonders of spiritual gifts, healing has been a significant attraction for Pentecostalism in Africa (A. Anderson). Pentecostalism has been hailed for its most significant contribution to "restoring the miracle power of the New Testament" (1). Nevertheless, a new wave of Pentecostal and Charismatic church leaders that firmly hold to charismatic gifts solely for miracles, signs, or wonders seem to be losing focus on the mandate of the Great Commission and the salvation of lost souls in line with the New Testament Church. Rather than a church that emphasizes biblical preaching and teaching of the Word of God-God's redemptive Good News for humanity-some churches within the Pentecostal and Charismatic denominations in Liberia are heavily concerned about great crowds of people who attend their meetings not because the people are going to meet Jesus, get to know him and make him known, but the crowds flock in because of the demonstration of charismatic gifts that might yield a miracle, sign, or wonder. The purpose of this project; was, therefore, to evaluate the current ministries of four Pentecostal churches in Monrovia, Liberia, using the case study method, to determine the extent of Bible-based preaching and teaching practiced in conjunction with the practice of prayer and charismatic gifts in order to contribute to long-term sustainability of the participating churches. Using as methodology three research instruments-questionnaire, focus group, and an interview-the project yielded six findings that will lead a church into a wholesome and successful sustained ministry that produces saved people in light of the Great Commission. The six findings are as follows: 1) A church's sustainability relies primarily on consistent teaching and preaching God's Word; 2) Continuous existence of a church requires a balance: emphasizing charismatic gifts, while prioritizing preaching and teaching the Word of God; 3) Liberians, and Africans at large, naturally and culturally emphasize God's power; 4) Continuous existence of a church is also inextricably linked to leadership and the mission and vision of that church; 5) A church to relies solely on charismatic gifts is in danger; and 6) Four indispensable factors of a church's continuous existence are: prayers, discipleship, mentees' development, and Christ's love demonstrated.
