Many churches in the West are rethinking their missiology and ecclesiology in light of both a post-Christendom context and the Missional Church conversation. The question becomes how to help churches embrace a new paradigm of thought and practice as they look to join God on mission in the world. The purpose of this research was to identify and compare threshold concepts in the missional church paradigm as experienced by missional thinkers and practitioners in both RiverTree Christian Church and other Missional Church thinkers and practitioners in the United States through the implementation of a concept mapping reflection exercise. This Ministry Transformation Project begins with a biblical exploration of God's agency as both revelator and teacher to look at how discipleship, liminality, and thresholds become places of transformation in Scripture. From there, this research explore shifts in western missiology through the work of Barth, Bosch, Newbigin, the Gospel in Our Culture Network, and others who have helped shape and inform what can now be called the Missional Church Paradigm. It also draws from educational theorists Land and Meyer and the burgeoning field of Threshold Concept Theory to posit the possibilities of function Threshold Concepts of the Missional Church Paradigm and how they might be discovered. Drawing from the Concept Mapping methods of Novak and Canus, this MTP used a concept mapping exercise and reflection interviews with seventeen missional thinkers and practitioners from both within and outside of RiverTree. The findings propose several possible Threshold Concepts for the Missional Church Paradigm and some of the key relationships, experiences, and practices that helped facilitate a lasting paradigmatic shift in participants.
