Buoyed by the modern worldwide missionary movement, Pietism and the larger expansion of evangelical Protestantism circa the 1860s (Juhnke 1989; Schlabach 1980) Mennonites in North America developed a renewed interest in missions. They participated by sending missionaries locally and globally after more than three centuries of social withdrawal from the world (Jacobs 1983; Ruth 2001; Juhnke 1989; MacMaster 1985; Kaufman 1931). Current trends, however, indicate a declining pattern in participation in missions among Mennonites (Kanagy 2007; Kanagy, Beyene, and Showalter 2012). What is causing this recent decline and how do contemporary Mennonite leaders see the role of their churches in the global missio Dei? Since the Mennonite church is extensive worldwide and could not be studied in one piece of doctoral research, this study explored possible causes of the declining trend in missions through the lens of church and mission leaders and young adults associated with Mennonite churches in Eastern Pennsylvania-a microcosm of what is happening throughout the Mennonite denomination in other parts of the United States. The Mennonite churches in Eastern Pennsylvania also form the conference of churches in which I am an ordained minister. This research examined current understanding of the missio Dei and the missional church concepts by Mennonite church leaders, the role of the church in it, and the factors (negative or positive) they believe to be affecting their members' current understanding and participation in the missio Dei. The missio Dei and missional church literature argue that when the theological concept of missio Dei and missional theology are properly understood and practiced, the church discovers its nature and purpose and organizes itself for missional faithfulness. The North American context is changing rapidly. Many influential forces are shaping believers' understanding of and convictions about their personal and communal calling to be involved in God's mission of redemption and reconciliation for the entire creation. These changes are also affecting the Mennonite church. Having reviewed the Anabaptist-Mennonite history of mission and discovered the current understanding and participation in missions through interviews with a selected sample of Mennonite pastors, scholars and the younger generation, this study proposes a data-informed change model that could help these congregations change from being churches that only financially support mission programs and projects that others carry out to become missional churches where the heart of the church is focused on God's mission locally and globally. The model will be tested and evaluated at my home congregation James Street Mennonite church for its effectiveness. A follow up plan will be informed by the results from the pilot project.
