This thesis serves to analyze the history, lives, and work of choral conductor-composers from the nineteenth century to the present day. The choral conductor-composer is a musician who both directs choirs and composes for them as their primary work, and who does both things prolifically. Specifically, this research offers perspective on how engaging regularly with both disciplines creates a symbiotic relationship where one informs and elevates the other.It opens with an historical retrospective of noteworthy choral conductor-composers from the past two hundred years, which is then followed by interviews with thirteen living choral conductor-composers. The interviewees offer critical insight pertaining to their work in both areas and help us to better understand how the two disciplines are inherently synergistic. This study offers aspiring choral conductor-composers an essential glimpse into the inner workings of this profession.
