In the U.S., when all things are equal, Black male adolescents charged with a violent crime are more likely to be transferred to adult criminal court and receive more severe sentences than their White juvenile counterparts. While there is an abundance of literature on racially biased sentencing, it is unclear whether the underlying mechanism for discriminatory sentencing towards Black youth is influenced more by prejudice - unfavorable feelings towards others - or dehumanization - the attribution of fewer human traits to some individuals than others. Across three studies, I investigate what social attitudes are more predictive of judicial punishment when testing the defendant's, victims, and mock juror's racial background. Contrary to anticipations, no strong evidence indicates that mock jurors discriminated against racial minority defendants. The only consistent finding was that participants recommended harsher punishment against White defendants. Results suggest that dehumanization is often not a strong predictor of judicial punishment when prejudicial attitudes are accounted for. While these studies did not support most of the hypotheses, they shed light on an interesting phenomenon that may occur during a trial. For instance, Study 2 showcased a cross-over effect for capital punishment, suggesting that participants were less likely to support the death penalty when the suspected crimes were committed with perpetrators and victims of different racial backgrounds.
