Though previous research has connected self-objectification to a range of sexual outcomes including sexual dysfunction (Grower & Ward, 2018; Lindner & Tantleff- Dunn, 2017) and risky sexual behaviors (Impett et al., 2006), research has not explored the role of self-objectification in relational outcomes. Self-silencing, a normative behavioral consequence of self-objectification, may significantly influence outcomes for women and their relationships. Body appreciation, a widely recognized feature of positive body image, has demonstrated promising benefits which may work against consequences of self-objectification, such as self-silencing. This research explored the connections between self-objectification, body appreciation, and self-silencing in romantic relationships among cisgender women. A total of 454 respondents of primarily heterosexual, white, and college-educated background participated in this study, which was administered in an online anonymous survey. Results indicated that there was a strong relationship between self-objectification and self-silencing tendencies, such that women higher in self-objectification also engaged in more self-silencing. Contrary to hypotheses, body appreciation did not significantly offset these associations. Results indicated that enjoyment of sexualization was a strong predictor of self-silencing tendencies and that women who were in romantic relationships engaged in less self-silencing than single women, both of which suggests that women may engage in self- silencing as a way to obtain and sustain sexual and romantic relationships. Results are discussed in light of methodological strengths and limitations, and clinical and educational implications are considered alongside recommendations for future research.
