This study concentrated on the possible relationship between personality traits, specifically personality traits from the Big Five model (BFM), and elite performance in the competitive electronic sports (esports) video game League of Legends (LoL). Data were gathered from 166 LoL players of various in-game success levels, as measured by their ranked match wins and losses within the video game's competitive hierarchy (ranked tier). The International Personality Item Pool 120 (IPIP-NEO-120) questionnaire was used to measure the participants' personality traits, and participants were divided into two groups of elite and non-elite ranked players based on their LoL ranked tier. The results indicated that players ranked in the two most elite tiers in LoL reported being less neurotic but more open to experience, agreeable, conscientious, and extraverted than other players. The current research is one of the few available studies involving esports performance and personality traits in a relatively new psychological research area of human performance. The research design and results are discussed within the available knowledge on personality and traditional competitive sports performance.
