Tactile graphics and touch objects are widely used means to make information accessible to Blind/Low-vision (BLV) Art Museum and Historical Site (AMHS) visitors. However, they are not always available, are difficult to maintain, and are often not effective in communicating information that would provide a meaningful understanding of the artifact for a BLV patron, particularly when it comes to works of art. Furthermore, touch objects are often hand-made by volunteers, or they are technologically complex, neither of which are easily reproducible. This ultimately limits the number of tactile graphics and touch objects available to BLV patrons, or anyone who is a tactile learner. Historical textiles are generally accessible only to sighted visitors and are not available for anyone to touch, due to their fragile nature. While swellform tactile graphics are easily produced and can effectively describe forms and contours, they are not effective in communicating aesthetic information about the artifacts they interpret. This thesis presents an exploration and evaluation of a novel way to utilize digital embroidery to create tactile graphics on paper as a method of interpreting historical embroidered textiles. These tactiles are low-cost, easily reproducible, and materially relate to the original artifacts. Prototypes were produced and recommendations for design and fabrication were developed in close collaboration with BLV tactile graphics experts.
