Research findings reveal how the two leading digital music streaming platforms, Apple Music and Spotify, are changing the face of the media landscape. Communication theorist Marshall McLuhan developed the Medium is the Message theory. His theory emphasizes how the medium, the mode of communication, shapes how the audience receives the message. The available music consumption technology defines how music is conveyed and received by music consumers. Examining the development of streaming technology through this lens reveals how technological developments in the music industry have established the limits and characteristics of music, heavily influencing its impact on the listener. With the emergence of streaming culture, the commodification of music has shifted from an ownership model to a subscription rental model. Music streaming subscriptions allow users to pay a low monthly fee to access an extensive music library rather than purchasing individual songs and albums. With music consumers utilizing streaming services, illegal music torrenting activity has decreased. Despite the emergence of music streaming and legal battles nearly eradicating illegal music pirating, recording artists still struggle to make a living wage with the current payment structures established by leading streaming companies. Music curators and software engineers act as gatekeepers of the music industry with the power to shape moments and moods. Streaming companies provide recommendations to music consumers using a hybrid model of human and algorithmic curation techniques. Apple Music and Spotify's music intelligence software caters to consumers' music preferences by creating a custom audio footprint for each user. Streaming services use machine learning to gather users' listening history and behavior data to create personalized playlists. Curated playlists impact the listener experience and musician royalty distribution profit margins, giving gatekeepers immense control over the music industry. Music curators hold tremendous curatorial responsibility as their recommendation systems can make or break artists' careers. This research discusses the implications and predicted outcomes of the streaming war between Apple Music and Spotify, weighing the benefits and drawbacks from the user, company, and artist perspectives. Streaming companies' policies impact equity in the music industry, often proliferating patterns of inequalities. The music industry is rife with discrimination against marginalized populations, particularly women. Streaming companies perpetuate existing biases resulting in a pay gap for women in music. Curators and software engineers have the power to maintain the gender wage gap or close it through play parity. The music industry has a history of ignoring repeated incidents of sexual exploitation and abuse, enabling predators financially and culturally. Failing to reform the sexist culture in the music industry is detrimental to women in music and music consumers. Streaming companies have the power to implement censorship policies to combat the culture of abuse but have failed to do so effectively. Streaming companies must tackle the ethical dilemma of cancel culture by developing Hateful Conduct Policies designed to ban artists for egregious actions. Simply removing artists for hate speech does not alter the culture of sexual abuse and sexist behavior in the music industry. By not partaking in cancel culture, the streaming companies actively endorse and profit from the existing exploitative culture. The music streaming industry needs to end the pattern of complicity, incorporate ethical standards, and develop a code of conduct to hold recording artists accountable for their actions.
