The current dissertation used two studies to investigate the effects of a narrative's discourse structure on a person's target emotions (suspense and curiosity in Study 1 and suspense and surprise in Study 2), engagement with the narrative, and perceived ease of understanding the narrative, all of which were predicted to positively predict enjoyment. Both studies proceeded as between-subjects online experiments using the Amazon MTurk platform. Participants in both studies were randomly assigned to read one narrative that was varied by discourse structure, main character gender, and plot. The two discourse structures administered in Study 1 were linear (events presented in chronological order) and reverse (the beginning and ending events swapped). Discourse structure only had a significant main effect on participants' perceived ease of understanding of the narrative, whereby a linear narrative was perceived to be easier to understand. Perceived ease of understanding then negatively related to enjoyment. Through a parallel mediation analysis, discourse structure was shown to indirectly affect enjoyment through perceived ease of understanding. Zero-order correlations showed curiosity to positively relate to enjoyment. The two discourse structures administered in Study 2 were linear and end-weighted (the beginning event placed at the end). Unlike Study 1, discourse structure had no significant main effects on the measured variables. Zero-order correlations found surprise to positively relate to enjoyment. Additionally, zero-order correlations in both studies found suspense and narrative engagement to positively relate to enjoyment and perceived ease of understanding to negatively relate to enjoyment. The findings suggest that the event order presentation of a narrative can have an impact on how easy participants find a narrative to understand, which can subsequently influence their feeling of enjoyment. Narrative events presented in a chronological order provide a better opportunity for feeling like it is easier to understand a narrative, which also leads to lessened feelings of enjoyment.
