In recent years several health care institutions have recognized the importance of marketing. The main reason for understanding the need of marketing is due to the fact that the resources are limited. Marketing helps the healthcare providers to offer the products in such a manner; shape and place that will suit the pocket of users and at the same time attract more users. It also helps in generating sufficient funds or attract sufficient donors for ongoing functions and expansion of existing facilities. The importance and need of marketing can be appreciated from the fact that it establishes link between producer (hospital) and customer (patient) and informs the consumer about the special services available in a hospital. Marketing is also used as a formidable weapon to forge a competitive edge over their rivals. It also lays emphasis on health care education and fitness program. It helps the people to check out hospitals before they actually need to check into one.The term marketing is heard more often in the business function and it has gain great importance in industrial field. Whenever products are to be sold or purchased, the word marketing cannot be overlooked however excessive competition, consumerism and cost containment have made the concept of marketing to be incorporated in the healthcare organizations.Healthcare marketing involves the activities that relates to the development, packages, pricing and distribution of healthcare products and to any mechanism used for promoting these products.In the 21stcentury, the business environmental conditions are likely to be more volatile. The globalization has opened new vistas for the development of service generating organizations. The intensity of competition is found moving upward. The organizations active in enriching their strength have been found establishing an edge and compelling the week organizations to make final goodbye. This makes it essential that even the Indian conditions, the service generating organizations make sincere efforts to make themselves stronger as stronger, if they have to survive and thrive.The healthcare industry is a large global, incredibly competitive arena that requires creativity and person of its marketers. Healthcare marketing is still in its early stage of development and as such is characterized by an air of excitement and exploration, not only our new products and services constantly being introduced but the fact that there are few established marketing procedures in healthcare that makes for an exciting environment.One of the fastest growing areas of health care administration is that of health care marketing. Until recently, marketing was considered by mainly as an unorthodox way of promoting health care. As a matter of fact, marketing and all activities connected with it such as advertising were considered loathsome and offensive in a hospital set up. Hospital marketing is slowly but surely coming of age in our country and is being woven into the fabric of the hospitals planning and public relations programmes.As the specialized hospitals are growing in number, each is trying to create a distinct 'positioning' for itself. Each one is trying to create a unique identity and wants to cater to a specific segment of the market. The application of marketing principles in hospitals may deliver goods to the society and also ensure their financial viability. The product or the services in a hospital differ from one hospital to another.
